I was heading to the hostel on my way back from farmers market and decided to give this place a try when I saw the line out the door. One of the best decisions I've made on this trip!!!
The prices are super affordable, especially compared to the same things that you'd get at farmers market (like spam musubi). I built a custom bento box for my partner and I and it came out to just over $12. And we have leftovers in the fridge!
Super yummy, super affordable, super worth the (admittedly long, but I went about 10am) wait.
Line was out the door at like 9am, but sooo worth it! We ended up ordering a build your own bento box en route to Volcano Nat’l park, and boy I wish I had enough time to go to this place once more before we left. The shrimp tempura and the ono tempura was so tender and fantastic. I preferred the ono to the mahi imo (mahi was a little on the drier side). I’d skip the musubi, unless you’re looking for a heavy rice snack to hold you over. The long rice is like a thick glass noodle and it was delicious!! I didn’t want to share with my fiancé lol. Tempura eggplant and the shoyu fish cake were both excellent as well (the latter was a little sweet but I rather liked it). Overall, everything was delicious here – highly recommend! Oh oh and the Japanese manju cake things that are in plastic packages. They’re like pie crust outside and red bean inside. Pretty tasty!
When in Hilo… Okazuya is a must! Japanese plantation days finger/picnic foods ordered one piece at a time! Take-out only! Kawamoto’s resonates 80-years of history and it has a special place in my heart. $10 per person buys you a lot!
Ok…I remember always loving the food here for as long as I can remember growing up on Hawaii Island. Maki sushi, shrimp tempura, nori chicken, fried chicken, mahimahi and shoyu pork hit the spot on a recent visit. Plus the Pie Crust Manju and Ranger Cookies are #brokedamout too! An absolute must stop if you’re in Hilo. Old school grinds made with love. You can taste it in every bite. 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
Fantastic selection of Bento box favorites. Gotta get there early before they sell out. Prices are very affordable. Super good value and yummy. Recommended.
It was a cool experience to get to choose the items in your bento box. The best thing there was their shrimp tempura. The ahi and ono tempura were quite soggy. The cha siu were big pieces. The korean fried chicken was good as well although not very korean flavored. The maki roll is 90% rice. Prices are more expensive than expected. Very nice staff though. Looks very popular with locals. Parking is on the street but fills up quickly.
Great local place for an impromptu custom bento. Line was a few feet out the door so had to wait about 20 minutes for order to be taken. When you get up to the case a patient employee will take down your order then go fill your order and meet you at the register to pay. Don’t worry you’ll have plenty of time once you get inside to ogle at all the food options they have in the case. Everything tasted great and satisfied the craving. Don’t forget to order at least a serving or two of long rice, nishime (stewed root veggies), mac salad. They had a Portuguese pickle on the white board for $6. Great rice vinegar based pickle option that helped cut through the fried options.
Best place to get lunch to take to the beach!!! Get there very early as it's popular and many items sell out quickly. They keep making food all morning though! Parking can be a little tricky, but it's worth it! Friendly, helpful staff. Love the fresh fish, and the tempura shrimp is awsome! My favorite take out in Hilo.
